“Just as a tube of toothpaste, when squeezed, pours out the contents within, a human, when squeezed, pours out the contents of their hearts.”
Have you ever been in a fight and hurtful words start pouring out of your mouth? After calming down, you said something like, “I was just mad, I didn’t mean any of that.” According to the Bible, that’s not true. Just as a tube of toothpaste, when squeezed, pours out the contents within, a human, when squeezed, pours out the contents of their hearts.
A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Luke 6:45
We all have either evil or good stored up in our hearts. Listen to people long enough and their mouths will tell you everything about them.
This is true of God also. What’s in His heart has been spoken out of His mouth. We have exactly what is in His heart in our hands… the Bible. Jesus is called “The Word of God” both in John 1:1 and in Revelation 19:13. That made me wonder what is meant by “Word” in this case.
Word in Greek is logos meaning– a word, being the expression of a thought.
When we look at Jesus in this light, He is the expression of the thoughts (heart) of God to the world. Oh, how we should pay attention to everything He did and every word He said.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:3
“God used words to make all things out of nothing. No wonder scripture proclaims life and death comes through words.”
Through “the Word” all things were made. How? Because through Jesus, God spoke the world into existence. God used words to make all things out of nothing. No wonder scripture proclaims life and death comes through words. Words matter. We will either be condemned or acquitted through our words (Matthew 12:37). Gentle words can turn away wrath (Proverbs 15:1) and break a bone (Proverbs 25:15). Words will build up our children, spouses, and everyone around us, or words will destroy them.
“We have been given the greatest gift in the world to hold God’s Word not only in our hands, but to hide it in our hearts, and speak it with our tongues.”
We have been given the greatest gift in the world to hold God’s Word not only in our hands, but to hide it in our hearts, and speak it with our tongues. How sad we take this instrument called our tongue and use it for worthless stuff like gossip, slander, and bragging. Our tongue tells the truth of our heart like nothing else.
A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Proverbs 15:4
If our tongue is wholesome, it is a tree of life. That is mind-blowing. The tree of life was what enabled Adam and Eve to live forever. When we are given over to God, our tongues become the instrument on this planet to bring life to people.
“Our words will tell the truth about us.”
On the other hand, a tongue full of perverseness (that word means viciousness) breaks a person’s spirit. No wonder God will be able to pull up our words on judgment day and play them back (even the ones said in secret), and we will know whether we should be acquitted or condemned by what we hear. Our words will tell the truth about us.
“How much better to see the truth now instead of on judgment day when it’s too late.”
If you are reading this and it is frightening or depressing, good. How much better to see the truth now instead of on judgment day when it’s too late. Take a good look at a day in your life. What is pouring out of your mouth? Be completely honest with yourself. Do you love to gossip? Do you see bad in everyone? Do you berate your spouse and kids to control them? Are you always a victim and want to make sure everyone knows? Do you complain? All those words will follow you into the presence of God. If your words are what I just listed, it’s a heart issue.
We should all take our hearts to God and ask Him for open heart surgery. Thank Him for giving us all something so obvious to see our true spiritual condition. None of us need go any further than the hole in our face. Whatever is pouring out of it is the truth about our hearts.
“If we are full of God’s Spirit, His fruit will be produced.”
If praise, gratitude, encouragement, and God’s Word is pouring out of our mouths, those words will also follow us into God’s Presence. If we are full of God’s Spirit, His fruit will be produced.
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs 18:21
Everyone around us every single day is eating the fruit of our tongues. Are people eating life or death when we speak?
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak….
Matthew 12:36
Those words are in red in my Bible. They came from the mouth of Jesus Christ. They should humble every single one of us.
“Only a changed heart will produce a changed tongue.”
Only a changed heart will produce a changed tongue. I don’t get near as upset with what I say as the heart behind what I say. I have let my tongue drive me to the feet of my Jesus and beg Him for a changed heart. I hope you will do the same.
